Adding Horsepower to a 1994 Camry 2.2L
Hi, I am looking to increase horsepower in my car without putting a large amount of cost into it. I have right now a Cold air intake, and a exhaust, and for looks right now i have 18 inch chrome rims with 225/40ZR18 inch tires, with 20% tint and also have custom painted Calipers and Drums, I would like to put on a body kit as well but everything's shipping is insane shipping costs. . I have looked around on the net trying to find a short shifter or anything that could increase my horsepower... But seem to keep rolling into a dead end. If anyone could give me and suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.
The 2.2L was designed for economy and has poor intake flow in the cyl head. There has never been a lot of performance mods for this engine.
A turbo can be added, this seems to work well.
Some have removed the balance shaft for a little added hp.
There may be a cylinder head that bolts up from Toyota variants of this engine used in other models.
Otherwise not much can be gained without spending a good deal of money.

I personally don't have experience with turbos thus can only provide suggestions based on second hand experience.
Years ago there was a Washington State dealer (Burien Toyota) that offered a bolt on turbo package for the 4 cylinder. I don't think it is offered anymore but the advertisement and feedback gets picked up on Google. It seemed like a decent, bolt on package that could give you some ideas. See link below:

Suggest you review posts at the Toyotanation website or ask there. Members have turbocharged the 4 cylinder Camry and posted results. It seemed to work just fine but it was suggested to have a strong engine (not high mileage). The opinion was Ebay turbo's did not last very long between rebuilds.

Also read up on the MR2, Celica, 3S-GTE.
The 5S-FE has been known to throw a rod if hot rodded too much.
