Default keyless entry, 97 camry, ecu working?

background - just bought a 97 camry. i only have 1 valet key and a copy. no remote. i bought a remote online. i tried using the directions to the remote by pressing in the green button on the ecu unit. it does nothing. the light on the led security status never lights. it has never lit at all. i have read many forums about it. how do i know if the ecu unit is just not hooked up, or if it is in valet mode? remember i have a new bought remote, and i do not have an original key. the electronic locks DO work though. i just can't program the remote. can anyone help?
thanks!!!

Try asking at the Toyotanation website.

What procedure are you using?

2 or 3 button remote, Toyota had 2 models and two systems?

Look up TSB AX005-99 and EL008-98 on the internet.
