Default Lamp Failure Sensor

The tail lights on my 1993 Camry have stopped working. The brake lights still work. I opened the Lamp Failure Sensor and one of the connections was fried. I resoldered the connection and this fixed the problem, but the wires leading to that connection heat up and start to burn. What could be causing this to happen? Is it just a problem with the sensor itself, or is it something wrong with the wiring leading to it?
