rotating the crank two wimes to check the marks just makes sure you used tdc of the compression stroke. the first time around your marks wont line up the second time they should. crank at 0 and the hole in the cam gear spoke should have the uppermost notch on the cam gear housing centered in it.uppermost reffering to the mark that is at the highest point in the cams rotation, not 12 oclock.(since the motor sits on an angle not perpendicular to the ground.

I am in the process of changing the water pump on a 01 camry 2.2l. I noticed a timing belt change sticker under the hood changed at 488,104, I'm changing the water pump at 502,136. The problem I have is the timing marks are not lining up. I get the crankshaft marks lined up the camshaft marks are just a little bit short of being perfect. I noticed a green paint pen mark on camshaft pully and backplate. Align the green marks and crankshaft mark is off. I'm lost. Car runs great water pump started leaking

So, you have the pulleys aligned and belt installed but still loose as in belt slack. Now when the belt tension pulley is released to pull up the slack, the timing pulley can rotate as the slack is taken out. This is a COMMON issue.

With crank at the correct alignment, the fix is to orient the cam pulley such that AFTER the belt slack is removed the pulley marks are now aligned. Move the cam pulley one tooth one way or the other as needed prior to releasing the tenisioner to end up with the correct alignment after the two complete crank rotations CW.

Use the factory indicator notches holes, etc as paint was not used as a factory marking system.

Does happen when releasing the belt tensioner
