2000 Camry - Junk it or repair it dilemma

The straps should be more than adequate.

The diagnostic report shows trouble codes for the EVAP system. These codes are for the fuel tank emissions system. They would not normally cause issues with engine operation.

The engine noise in the video is of concern. It sounds like rod knock. I searched the internet on "5SFE rod knock". I found a video having the same noise.


If the rod bearing is going this is bad, sooner or later the engine will fail. A rod attached to the crankshaft bearing is now rattling around and beating on the crankshaft.

How much time the engine has left, don't know.

Sometimes replacing the bad rod bearing helps for time. This repair though requires work and it is most likely cheaper and better to install a used engine.

On the off chance:

Look around the passenger's side of engine in case something is hitting the crank pulley or something it drives.

Use the section of hose as a stethoscope. Try to determine where the noise is coming from. Listen to the valve cover, area of engine where the crank is and below. Might be best to move the hose down the back side of the engine to avoid the exhaust manifold.
