Default Camry radiator change...

1993 Camry 4 CL...

Can the radiator be replaced all from under the hood, or do I have to get underneath as well to reach some fittings and parts??

I ask because we have some wet weather and I'd like to get it done tomorrow without having to lay on the ground and work from underneath the car...if I don;t have too....

any thoughts?

Yes, however you will need to get somewhat under the car to unscrew the radiator drain.

If knowing what you are doing it can be pulled out pretty quick.

There are 3 electrical connectors that need unplugging, 2 for radiator fans, 1 for the coolant temp sensor at the bottom of the radiator.

Remove the upper radiator and small coolant overflow hoses at the radiator. The bottom and trans oil cooler hoses at the engine. Take note of which trans hose goes to which fitting on the trans.

Some fluid will leak out of the trans hoses. If possible determine which hose connects to the trans fitting that drains to the trans pan. Disconnect the other hose and blow through the hose to push the fluid into the trans pan. Or plug the hoses to prevent a mess.

If the car has cruise control, the box needs to be unbolted from the chassis and moved aside (the throttle cables can remain connected but unplug the electrical cable). The plastic top comes off. The cruise box has two throttle cables running into it.

There is one hold down bracket on each side of the radiator top to unbolt.

Once all is done the radiator should come out but recheck before pulling too hard.

Transfer the fans, coolant sensor, lower radiator and trans coolant hoses to the new radiator. Take note of how they are lined up on the old radiator and install the same way on the new one. You may need to install the pipe fittings onto the new radiator, take note of how they were installed in the old radiator.

Once done, reinstall.

When filling the radiator with coolant, belch the air out by squeezing the large radiator hoses. If possible take note of how much coolant drained out and add as close as possible this amount.

I got it done! very easy to do, simply disconnecting all the hoses and the 3 fan plugs, and then it came right out after removing the top mounts. Didn;t even have to remove the cruise control system at all.

attached the fan housing and hoses and back in the car she went...

took about an hour!
