Default Info about 97 engine interchangability

Hey guys,

New to this forum (mostly DSM's and MR2's for me) with a question about a 97 camry im working on for a friend.

Engine is pulled and fully disassembled. number one Rod bearing completely gone and killed the crank journal and well as the big end of the rod.

Looking to find out what other cars I canpull a crank from. There are various 90-92 mr2s, celicas, corollas, and camrys thatI have access to (alljunked). Hoping to find a crank and rod set that will work in this 97 camry. (5sfe)

I hear that in 92 they added the balancer assembly, and that in july 94 they changed the gear on both the crank and balancer to reduce start up noise. is that correct?

If i pulled the crank and balancer out of a 92-94, or just used a crank out of a 90-92, would that work? Basically, is the crank the same except for the gear to drive the balancer? Has anyone just eliminated the balancer by leaving it out of the engine? Or if they are swapped as a pair, can i use the one out of a pre-94 motor?

Thanks guys!

I figure I'll update this thread in case anyone goes to search it in the future.

I went to the self-pull yard yesterday. Found a 94 camry, so I thought I was golden. Hole in the block and missing piston meant Crank journal was gone.

Picked up my tools and moved 3 or 4 cars down to a couple of celicas, both 90 and 92 (the cars with 5sfe's say it right on the hood, so I figured I was good.

The 92 looked like it had a fresh head and was in the yard for other than engine damage. Got thebottom end apart to check it out, and everything looked great. Decided I might as well pick up the whole thing so I pulled the engine alone, and then yanked all the manifolds off it.

Bottom line, its a 6 bolt crank, but I have the flexplate so no big deal. I'm gonna clean the outside up a bit and do a thorough comparison to the old block.

I took it home in the back of a little eagle talon so I had to dissasemble it in the car. THe head looks new and when I got that off it looks like the bottom end was just rebuilt too!

I'll update on if there come any compatability issues.

OKay, so there are several differences and Im wondering if this is even a 5sfe like the car said.

The mains are the same. THe rod journals are 2.000 compared to the camry's 2.160.

The pistons/bore issmalleras well on the 92 celica motor.

These aren't really areas of concern, even if it was a 2.0L (it clearly said 2.2L 5sfe on the car) all I care about is getting it running.

So heres the problem. The rear motor mount for the celica is on the tranny, and on the camry it goes with the carrier bearing. There are two places on the block with different mounting bosses.

The mounting holes for the carrier bearing/motor mount do not match up with threads on the celica block. As you can see picture one of the camryblock vs picture3 of the celica block.(put them in a weird order)
Only the two locating pins and one bolt line up.

Also, there is a boss on the front of the motor on the right side (picture 2)that is not present on the celica motor.(picture 4) Although, for the life of me, i can't think of what goes there.

Need to solve this carrier bearing, motor mount problem. (you can see the bearing not matching up in picture 5
