07 camry 2.4l timing specs
Hello all. Motor rebuilt due to oil consumption. Timing set up according to manual. Checked 2 to 3 times. Cam phaser gear on intake camshaft was removed, clicked, then put back on by friend. My question is does anyone know specifics with the lock and unlock procedure and what should the timing be? It shows 15°at idle and increases to around 30° and higher when revving the engine.
Any suggestions or advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Engine timing is 5-15 degrees at idle.
Toyota only lists min/max overlap with little detail of degrees versus actual RPM.
At start up, idle, high speed/high load, low coolant temp the cam overlap is minimal.

That's kinda was what I was wondering. 5-15degrees at idle. Mine stays at 15°, goes no lower and increases up to 30-40° when revving. That's why I had the question about the intake cam gear. Was removed but put immediately back on. Don't know if it had unlocked or locked itself, or if it is even working.
The VVTi gearing assy is internally spring loaded to a no overlap position. The assy has internal vanes that react against engine oil pressure supplied to the assy internals by the VVTi control system.
The manual states to install the gear assy using the timing mark(s). In doing so being careful not to rotate VVTi gearing when installing, which would change the static (unit off) overlap position.
The actual lock/unlock is done via the VVTi hydraulic valve and ECU. The valve is controlled by the ECU. The valve moderates engine oil flow/pressure. Oil pressure works against the spring via the vanes to rotate the VVTi gearing.
Once the proper overlap is achieved, the ECU shifts the hydraulic valve to a closed position. This locks the line pressure and holds the current gear assy rotational position.
If the VVTi assy was installed on the timing mark and the assy gearing was not rotated when doing this, everything should be OK.
The fact that the engine runs normally (assumed) confirms this.
