Default 1995 Camry idles under full throttle while driving

Hi,

Thankyou for allowing me membership to your site.

My friends 1995 Camry is experiencing some unusual problems.

It seems to run okay until the engine gets warm.

Once the engine get warmed up it will lose power especially up hills.

The motor might hunt a little bit but opening the throttle full just makes the revs fall faster.

Eventually the revs drop to about ~1,100 rpm and it will stay there until you lift the throttle & try pumping or giving slight acceleration or the hill goes away.

When the revs drop the motor sounds smooth.

I could not recreate the problem in neutral

She took it to a mechanic who did a full service but it didnt fix the problem.

She took it back to him & he changed the exhaust which as i suspected didnt fix the problem also.

Any potential cures to this peculiar ailment would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Tom.

4 or 6 cylinder engine?

Are you stating when engine warm and under a load it has no power but when cold it runs OK?

What happens if you change to a lower gear, such as manually shifting into 2nd or leaving the trans in 2nd or switching off the overdrive. If downshifting make sure the engine does not over rev.

What did the full service consist off, parts, repairs, etc?

The service changed the exhaust in what way, the converter, muffler, etc?

Thanks for the quick reply Joey,

It's a 4 cyl . 2.2 i think?

yeah when it's cold it run ok but,
when it's warm and under a load it has no power & goes back to idle speed while driving to about 20kms.

I never tried downshifting , it's an auto , I will give that a go tommorrow.

The full service was plugs, air filter, oil, oil filter, fuel filter.

With the exhaust he changed the muffler, part of the pipe, not sure about the cat.

Thanks

hmmm, ok I've tried downshifting when the revs drop.

What happens is the revs increase but they still stay in the same spots eg;

In drive about 1,100 rpm,
In 2nd about 1,500 rpm
In low about 2,400 rpm

Speed about 20kms/h in all gears

So atm i think i can rule out the gear box.

Because it only happens when the engine warms up to normal operating temperature I'm guessing it has something to do with some sort of heat sensitive switch.

I'm gonna try the egr system next, just give it a clean & maybe shout some expletives at it (verbal motivation technique).

I friend of mine was saying his friends car (i forget which type) used to do the same/similiar thing if you hit the rev limiter while driving & it was something to do with the computer.

Do these old Camry's 1995 2.2 have computers?

I read here some people talking about error codes. How do i get an error code number?

Is it possible just to take this car to a Toyota mechanic & they plug it in and 5 minutes later they can say what is wrong?

cheers.

yup, are they showing some error codes? that might help in figuring out the problem.
