Hmm..The 5S-FE IS listed as an non-interference engine
But the mechanic started the car and showed it to me after replacing the timing belt and crank sensor (and the spark plug, which had also given way), it made a horrible metal hitting metal noise, that got worse with increasing speed.
He said it was due to a bent valve..

I had a problem where the crankshaft timing gear keyway was sheared a tooth, with also a clunking sound that echoed the whole motor, sounding like the valves were junk and bottom damage too. The gear was loose and was the cause of the rattle. It increased with speed.
hopefully the motor wasnt low millage. I've had a few snap the belt, cranked multiple times and still run just peachy with a new belt on.
