The car shudders then the trans downshifts? Does the shudder go away after downshift?

Don't know for sure.

Make sure it is not an engine problem, the engine lugging under load, etc. Tune up?

Have you had the fluid level checked?

This year of Toyota did have a trans shutter problem for which a repair bulletin was issued. The fix seemed to be replacing or reprogramming the transmission computer.

A dealer should be able to state if your car is one that is effected (depends on trans type in the car) and if the so was the repair made. Toyota keeps records of these repairs. Given the cars age any extended warranty as a result of this problem may have expired.

Thank you for the help Joey
I think, maybe a transmission service might be the thing at next scheduled service.
