Unhappy 2007 Camry LE Rear Defroster Light Flashing

I'm new here and I appreciate all the assistance I can get. I have a 2007 Camry LE with a 2.4. When you start the engine the rear defrost light flashes for 30-45 seconds. While it is flashing the air conditioner will not come on. Once it stops flashing the air will come on but the only vents that work are the dash vents. I can adjust it from cold to hot air. My research tells me the Mode Door actuator (mode servo) is probably bad. I do not have a code reader that will read the BCM unless there is a way to get that data on my OBD II tester. So here comes the questions: Is there a way to get the codes without the reader? Some kind of process of hold this button down and turn on the key? Is there a way to troubleshoot without the code reader at all? I hate to go through the trouble and expense of dumping the coolant and refrigerant, removing the dash and the air handling box to replace this item unless I know its what's wrong. HELP!!!!!!!

the 2007 owners glove box book might help
http://justgivemethedamnmanual.com/t...-owners-manual

air con system directional flaps are either motorized or vacuum actuators
if one is suspect ..not all the dash has to be taken out to get to them

rear "on glass defogger "is only meant to stay on for short times to see enough between the wires ... to reverse
if left on all the time the wires will fail eventually

air con and heating dont usually have fault codes
only need a diagnostic reader until the "engine light "stays on or SRS air bag chime
