Default 2009 Camry Hybrid speedometer lighting

I recently took my Camry on a week long drive to Canada. I quickly became aware of the fact that you canot see the portion of the speedometer which indicates the vehicle speed in Kilometers Per Hour during the day time. KPH does not light up and the numbers are very small. Intensity and direction of the sun sometimes make it impossible to see KPH. I have tried all combinations of headlights on and off to improve dash illumination with no satisfaction.

Dealer in Canada was no help and apperared to not understand the problem.
Dealer in US I spoke with just said that is the way they are manufactured to save cost.
I would like to determine what is required to get the KPH and MPH rings of the speedometer to both be lighted so I can tell how fast I am going.
Any ideas?
