I just had my first oil change in six months because I only put 3,500 miles on my 2010 Camry LE. To my surprise, they (The Service Manager) said the recommended oil was conventional 5W-20, not the 0W-20 synthetic. I asked the mechanic that did the oil change, and he said the same thing. They would use the 0W-20 synthetic if I really wanted it, but it would raise the price of the oil change by about $40. That would be a real bummer. When I got home, I called two other Toyota dealers in my area, and they were all using conventional 5W-20 oil in the 2010 Camrys with the 2.5L engine. They said their customers would not stand for a $70+ oil change if they used the synthetic oil.
I then called the Toyota Help Line. I explained my concerned, and what the local dealers were using. This person put me on hold for about 15 minutes, then came back and said it is highly recommended I use the 0W-20 synthetic in my engine. At this stage of the game, I don't know what to do. I certainly will leave the conventional oil they put in my engine until the next change in 6 months. I asked the dealer what they would charge me for an oil change if I provided my own oil. It would be about $19, which would include a new oil filter. I might buy Molbil 1 at Wallmart, and have the dealer change it if I don't do it myself. That new style oil filter is another sad tale in itself. Charles Ranheim

3Camrys- I did paperwork two days ago on the Camry 2010LE. Dealer gave me options at her price, at least that is what her computer was showing. They were less expensive then all local Camry pages. I opted for side molding, (hate door dings) waterproof trunk tray(lots of sand and junk in my business and hobbies) alloy wheels (they had the same alloy wheels listed for $175 or 400 plus) I got dealer price on the $175.00.

Only drawback is I had to get the upgraded radio (AM/FM CD player with integrated satellite radio [6], MP3/WMA playback capability, auxiliary audio jack, USB port with iPod® [7] connectivity, hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth® [8] wireless technology, Vacuum Fluorescent Display, six speakers and in-glass antenna) not worth 400.00 for my use but I did not pay near that. i think it is the same radio (could not find out) as LE but with bluetooth and some other bells/whistles.
I had to get this one or wait until end of October for the color and w/out other options already added she claimed. I had to choose Toyoguard or radio and after test driving one with and without Toyoguard I did not notice much difference in road noise as you noted. She was showing me that my car is on a boat coming from Japan. I thought all Toyotas were made in USA. I'm not complaining. It should be here by next week some time. The cars for the Southeast come in at Jacksonville and that is where they add some options. it still cost me another $2800.00 but it is a year newer then the Honda. I probably could of done better but that was best price after 4 dealers and my brand new Honda trade would be depreciating the biggest point is today I found out I have 3 bulging disc to go along with my permanent neck injury so the Honda vs Toyota steering wheel issue is the big decider. Plus the comfy seats, less bumpy, less road noise can't hurt. I got $20,000. for the Honda.
Oh, the Sales manager came in at last minute and tried to do the number game and only give me $19,000.00 for the Honda but I acted like I was going to walk and he finally gave in. I know they made some money on it. Plus they are going to sell the Accord for more then $20,000.

I think the toyoguard is a dealer add on. I have never heard of it and my car doesn't have it. I got about a $2100 discount then after tax, title, etc., the cost was back up to about sticker. With my clunker, I got the car for about $19,300.

I hope you get a great deal but car dealers are very well trained to get your money. If the toyoguard is undercoating, I wouldn't pay for it. The car is very quiet without that. They probably charge $700+ to apply about $50 with of material.

The following is a reply from Toyota on the oil to use for the 2010 Camry and also the tool to use for changing the oil filter. Everyone wants to do the right thing in taking care of their car. It is a big investment and I take pride in my car and truck. I am going to use 5W-20 Valvoline in synthetic. Our winters are mild and I keep the car garaged. I cannot believe the anguish this has caused me. I am glad it is all behind me for now.

Toyota:
We apologize that the information regarding the oil and oil filter recommendations for the 2010 Camry have not been updated on our Toyota Owner's website.

From the factory, the 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine on your Camry came equipped with ILSAC multigrade, 0W-20 engine oil which is only available as a synthetic. Some dealerships may not yet have this oil available for their regular oil changes and will use 5W-20 petroleum based oil instead. 5W-20 is also available from some manufacturers as a synthetic and it is your choice to use it or the petroleum based oil.

Whichever oil is used, it should meet or exceed the above specifications. If synthetic oil is used, we do not recommend a longer oil change interval.

The part number for the oil filter element is 04152-YZZA1 and has a MSRP of $5.41. The filter element is not visible until the housing is removed. Removal of the oil filter cap and oil filter housing require specialized tools that can be purchased from SPX Tools, http://toyota.spx.com.

We again apologize that this information was not available from the web site and have advised our interactive marketing department so that it can updated.

If we can be of further assistance, please utilize the following link to find a variety of avenues to contact our offices, http://www.toyota.com/help/. Your email has been documented at our National Headquarters.

Do I really need to use 5W-20 or 0W-20 oil? Truth, NO!
Read on for technical facts regarding the use of 5W-20 or 0W-20 motor oil.

Ford, Honda and Daimler- Chrysler specify 5W-20 or 0W-20 motor oil for most gas engine powered cars and light trucks. Is 5W20/0W-20 oil really necessary?
Here are the technical facts behind 5W-20 and 0W-20 oil specs:
Question: My owners manual specifies 5W-20 or 0W-20 oil. Do I really need to use 5W-20 or 0W-20 oil and why did my 2000 model year vehicle require a 5W-30 oil, while the exact same engine in my 2001, 2002 and newer engines "requires" a 5W-20 or 0W-20 oil?
Answer: NO! You do not need to use a 5W-20 or 0W-20 oil. Do not let your dealer scare you by telling you that you have to use 5W-20 oil for your warranty. That is a tactic that some dealerships use to scare customers. Once you know the facts and the Federal Magnusson Moss Act law, you will be much better informed to protect your rights and use the type of fluids you want to use.
The main reason 5W-20 or 0W-20 oil was specified for your engine is to increase the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) reported to the Federal Government. CAFE is the combined average fuel economy of all of a vehicle manufacturers product line. Minimum CAFE levels are specified by the Federal Government. In order for a vehicle manufacturer to continue selling profitable large trucks and SUV's, which typically have poor fuel mileage ratings, as compared to smaller cars, and still meet mandated CAFE requirements, they must also sell enough of the smaller cars which have much better fuel economy ratings to offset the poor fuel economy ratings of the larger vehicles. For model year 2001, the change to a 5W-20 oil will allow Honda and Ford's overall CAFE to increase by a very small amount, typically in the tenths of a mile per gallon range. 5W-20 oil is a lighter viscosity than a 5W-30 oil and therefore has less internal engine frictional losses, or less drag on the crankshaft, pistons and valvetrain, which in turn promotes increased fuel economy. This increased fuel economy is virtually undetectable to the average motorist without the use of specialized engine monitoring and testing equipment under strictly controlled test track driving when compared to a 5W-30, 10W-30 or a 0W-30 viscosity motor oil.
For better performance and protection we recommend using Signature Series 0W-30 100% Synthetic Motor Oil (SSO). This is the top performing AMSOIL Motor Oil for gasoline powered light trucks and passenger cars. It uses race-proven technology and provides unsurpassed fuel efficiency and better wear protection than other conventional and synthetic motor oils. It is a 35,000 mile/1-year change interval motor oil. Use it in conjunction with AMSOIL's Super Duty Oil Filter's that specify a change interval of 12,500 miles/6-months, whichever comes first.
Question: Could using a 5W-30, 10W-30, 0W-30 or even a 10W-40 or 20W-50, oil in my vehicle which specifies a 5W-20 oil void my new car warranty?
Answer: Absolutely not. Vehicle manufacturers only recommend using motor oils meeting certain viscosity grades and American Petroleum Institute service requirements. Whether a motor oil is a 5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-30, 0W-30, 10W-40 or 20W-50 (for racing and high performance applications in, for example, a Cobra R Mustang) or even a synthetic vs. a petroleum based oil will not affect warranty coverage. The manufacturer is required by Federal Law to cover all equipment failures it would normally cover as long as the oil meets API service requirements and specifications and was not the cause of failure. In addition, the Federally mandated Magnuson - Moss Act states that a manufacturer may not require a specific brand or type of aftermarket product unless it is provided free of charge. If your dealership continues to tell you that you must use 5W-20 motor oil and or/ a specific brand of 5W-20 motor oil, then ask them to put it in writing. Their position is inaccurate, and, in fact violates existing law.*
Additionally, if there is ever a question of whether or not a particular motor oil was the cause of an engine failure make sure to get a sample of the used oil in a clean bottle, typically 6 oz. minimum. The oil can then be sent to two independent testing labs for analysis. This is standard procedure for most commercial vehicles, trucking, construction/excavation and fleet companies and there are numerous certified test labs all over the country. Remember, a knowledgeable and informed consumer is your best defense against being taken advantage of by a car dealership service center.
* Note: If a car or truck dealership, service center or other business states that using AMSOIL motor oil in your vehicle will void your new car warranty, ask for that statement in writing and send it to AMSOIL technical Services. If the business won't provide the statement in writing send AMSOIL Technical Services a letter identifying who made the statement, the name and location of the business and what the statement was. AMSOIL will then send a letter to the business informing them that their position is inaccurate, and, in fact, violates existing law. Your name will be held in confidence.

For those consumers that still must use a 5W-20 oil, even after reading this informative article, AMSOIL does manufacture a 5W-20 synthetic motor oil, called XL-5W-20. AMSOIL's 5W-20 synthetic motor oil provides outstanding wear protection and increased power, performance and fuel economy in high and low temperatures and also meets and exceeds the Honda, Ford and Chrysler fluid specifications.
