5th gear manual 2007 not working 170000 miles
my 2007 camry 4 cyl manual with 170000 miles - the 5th gear on trans just went, grinding noise when it is in other gears and pressing on clutch, no noise when in neutral
for last month car has been "jerking" when ever in 5th gear and when i would let off gas
any ideas?
costs??

new tranny, replacement tranny from junk yard, or rebuild.
continuing grinding in other gears means damage probably occurring w/ more driving.
So this car is 40,000 miles/yr +/-
to help us avoid similar fates, tell us when the last tranny fluid replacement was, if there was such a service ...
good luck

The price is good.
Regardless of the problem the old trans needs to be removed which means labor costs. The issue is if to fix the old trans or install something else.
The owners manual may have something on when to change the fluid. Every 40K would be good, cheap insurance.

^^^ Toyo would know prices better than I.
I wouldn't try to rebuild it, 'cuz the risk is of too much damage / too much $.
At the shop tell them you want to test drive it, when done, for 15 miles to get the oil warmed up and then have them
drain / replace the existing tranny fluid, so you start off with confirmed fresh fluid. (Or get it changed somewhere else.)
********
(*) I've had good luck going to independent oil change services with the tranny oil in hand and negotiate
a combined engine oil / tranny oil change. Like about $10 or 15 beyond the change engine oil price.
But I go on Mon or Tues AM when shops are slow, slow in my town.
Don't know the Camry tranny oil specs, but Hondas work well with regular 15W-40 diesel truck oil
in the tranny, and that's stocked at any oil change place anyhow.
