Default 95 4Cyl Auto Tranny Troubles Code 42 and 63

Hey guys, Im new here. I got a 1995 Camry 4cyl Automatic.

My tranny isnt working right, i tried to do some diagnosing but i could use a little help before i begin doing anything else.

The car doesnt move forward unless you rev it up really high maybe around 5,000 rpm. It works perfectly fine in reverse. I checked the coolant levels, they look fine, maybe a little burnt tho, so i plan on changing it.

Im looking at the shop manual and i did the diagnosis with the O/D light, and i get codes 42 and 63. No. 1 Speed Sensor Circuit and Shift Solenoid No.2 . Would anything make both of these sensors go bad? can it be one and not the other and maybe the car is stuck in 3rd or o/d gear? Which one should i go about replacing first when i drop the pan.

Where else other than the dealership can i find these solenoids in stock.

Thanks for the help

I'm not a trans guy but I did read that Codes 42 & 63 indicate a short or open circuit in electrical system for the solenoids, wire harness and connectors - not mechanical trouble such as a sticking solenoid valve. I guessthat includes a burnt out solenoid coil though. Does the car gointo fail safe mode? Can you shift manually through the gears OK?I guess you will check the harness connections first? You cancheckthesolenoidcoilswithout dropping the pan. Careful about touchingthe ohm meter to the ECM side pins as the 9 volts from the ohm meter could hurt the ECM. Just some thoughts, not much help.

its been a while since i've done any trany repair..so here it goes...when one to the solenoid goes out, i forget which one..the trany will start i forth gear... so the car should feel like a manual trans trying to start off of 5th gear from a dead stop...this sound like the same condition you have?...but first things first, check fluid level, line pressure, then a stall test, if those are ok.
then you will have to test the contiunity of the wireharness. if thats ok i would remove the oil pan and bench test the solenoid..
9 times out of 10 the soleniod is the problem...

From what I've read a simple ohm test can be done at theconnector, without removing the solenoid. Thereis a procedure for removing the solenoids (looks like #1&2 come out as unit?) and using compressed air to check leakage.

Thats basically what i think is going on, seems like the car wants to start in 3rd or o/d gears. So it will move forward, just takes some revving, as though i was in 4th on a manual. Will the speed sensor do this?

Idropped the pan anyways to look for any metal pieces, but didnt find much, there was a little bit of debris on the magnets, but i think that is normal. I tested the 2 solenoids and both were around 14ohms or volts? i forgot, and the manual says they should be 11 to 15. So i think those are okay. which leads me to think it is a short in the harness, maybe the ECM, or possibly the speed sensor.

I knew this girl that had the same exact problems as me but in a dodge stratus, and when the speed sensor was replaced it fixed everything. I think ill try testing the speed sensor tonight. and see what i come up with
