Default 95 Camry leaking gas.

Parked the car tonight and noticed a drip towards the back pretty close to center. Determined the drip is gasoline, stuck a 16 oz cool-whip container to catch it. I can't get under it to get a good look but I can see its dripping from above the exhaust heat shield. Anybody care to guess what the problem might be ? The car is about to turn 157,000 miles and has had an easy life, purchased new by my father. I can't call the service department until Monday morning, I will keep switching out Cool whip containers until then.I wanted to add I checked the cool whip container after 3 hours and the drip had stopped. I would say it leaked 2 or 3 ounces. Thanks for your comments.

Went out this morning and it was dripping again, checked it just now and it's still dripping. Hope it doesn't turn out to be a bad fuel tank, looks like that is an expensive fix. Hoping it's something minor, hard to justify spending a lot on a 25 year old car. What I hate is this last year I replaced the radiator and hoses along with new tires and changing all the fluids. I was hoping to get another 5 years out of this car, hopefully I will. Sure hope they can fix it tomorrow, I take my dog to a training class on Monday nights that is 200 miles round trip.

Try to determine where the fuel is leaking from as in top, bottom or the seam on the side of the tank. The tank is two stamped half shapes welded together at the flanges.

The only designed openings are on the top of the tank.

A common issue is the fuel tanks steel filler tube (where you fill with gas) rusts out.

The tank has vents for overflow and fuel vapors on top of the tank.

The fuel system is a "return" system. The fuel pump moves fuel to the engine fuel rail under pressure and then back to the tank.

You can try running the pump engine off to determine if there is leak in the fuel line system In the engine compartment find a small plastic box perhaps mounted on the drivers side strut tower. Inside the box are electrical terminals. Jump the B+ and FP terminals to allow the pump to run when the ign key is on.

Dropping the tank if needed is not that hard. Its held on by two steel straps a couple of bolts.

FYI, there is an access port to the top of the tank under the lower rear seat. The seat pulls up and forward to remove it. This will reveal a oval plate. Remove plate to view the top of the fuel pump

Can use a mechanics mirror (mirror on end of pogo stick to view tank for leaks.

Thank you for your comments, I'm hoping to get it looked at tomorrow. Unfortunately it sits outside in the driveway, with winter weather and lack of a lift there is not much I can do. You have given me a possibility of what to expect when they look at it. I will post my findings.

It turned out the fuel tank was pretty eaten up, a new replacement will be $650.00 total. I have decided to do it because the car is low miles and still to nice to junk.

Good job.

The 95 year of Camry is one of the best made! A solid car!

Well worth keeping up!

Thanks ! I like this forum and always appreciate the feedback I receive. Here is a little trivia, my father bought this car new in 1995 when he was 72. If I can keep this car going another 7 years I will be 72.
