Default fuel tank leaking

Hey guys,

Got an ideas on this one? the other day I noticed the smell of gas after I filled up before my trip to D.C. (I live in CT) needless to say I did not blow up. When I got back I pulled the rear seat cushion out and filled the tankwith gas.
I pulled the cover off so I could see the pump/sender plug on the top of the tank. I noticed gas on the top of the tank comming from the passenger side of the tank (not from around the gasket of th pump/sender)
I then turned my attentionto the evap tube. I checked thecharcol canister and the lines and they all passed the tests in the haynes guide.
Finally, I bypassed the whole evap system by hooking a hose up to the evapnipple on the top of the tank and let it ventto the airdirectlyandit still leaked from somwhereon top of the tank.
I checked allof the other hoses(fill tubes fuel lines etc. and they are dry.)
there are no othernipples or cover on that side (passenger side)of the tank.
So I have a hole in the top of the tank? My buddy suggested that a rock got stuck between the tank and body and created a hole.
Next step is to remove the tank i guess.
any other ideas?

Default RE: fuel tank leaking

A typical place for a leak is the gas filler tube which rusts out. The rubber hose between the filler tube and tank can also leak.

The tanks is two piece, the upper and lower half being welded together. It is possible a seem can be leaking, if so suggest another tank from a junk yard.

Strange if leaking from the passengers side as do not think there are any openings on that side. There might be a evaporation pipe in top of the tank, center front. This would be towards the passengers side of the pump cover.

The tank is held in with a couple of strap bolts and easy enough to drop out the bottom.

Yeah, that center pipe is the evap line and all of the other fittings, including the filler tube, are tight and dry. I thought about the seam being a problem too but the seam does not run around the top of the tank. It's gotta be a whole in the tank on the top. I guess i'll find out once I pull it out. Oh well.

when you look for a fuel leak, make sure the engine is running. the fuel lines will be pressurized and you are more likely to spot the leak. if you see fuel squirting, be careful since it under a lot of pressure.
