Default 97 camry 2.2 timing belt

How much should you tide the timing belt. I replaced mine couple time, I just let the spring tide it and tighten the tensioner. This time I can hear little bit of rattle at low speed and wondering if I need to retighten the belt.

The official Toyota procedure is to start with the crank pulley at TDC on No 1 cylinder. Loosen idler bolt 1/2 turn then rotate crank 1 7/8 turns CW and align pulley mark to what would be 45 deg BTDC. Once done tighten idler bolt.

Some owners bump the idler more then what the spring tension would apply and state this lowers belt slap.

But first suggest you use a hose as a stethoscope to narrow the sound location down. Could be something else. Check A/C pulley.

Thumbs up

I got it fixed. I had to retight the belt, it had a lot of slap. I followed your instruction, I failed to do 45 degree BTDC first time and this time got it right.
Thanks for your help.
