I was just given a 99 Camry with 197K. After a short distance, temp gauge will shoot up. Will run heater wide open and most times temp will come down some. I don't see any coolant leak. Could this be a possible head gasket issue and what is the potential cost for repairs?

 

I would try replacing the thermostat.
