Default Bad Brake Job

Hello,

I took my 05 Camry in a few months ago to have my rear brakes drum brakes done. I had them replace the hardware too. About a week after I had the brakes done, I started to notice that the Emergency brake would keep getting higher and higher until it didn't seem to do anything. I also noticed that the brake pedal got lower and lower before brake pressure would be applied. I could get the brake pedal to firm up by pushing on the brake pedal really fast, but if I do it slowly, it sinks to the floor.

Now I've taken it back to the auto shop twice. The first time the said it just needed a brake adjustment. That worked fine for about a week, but then it slowly started to do the same thing. The second time, they did another adjustment, and said they couldn't figure out why it was doing what it was doing. He said if it does it again, they may have to change the auto adjusters. It's now starting to do the same thing. I'm tired of taking it back and being charged each time, especially since it wasn't doing this before I took it to them in the first place. I welcome any advice. I'm considering just trying to fix the problem myself (I'm pretty handy with a little direction).

Thanks,

-Dan

The rear brakes are drums? Not disks incorporating a drum type emergency brake?

Does the E-brake system have a lever type handle or a foot type pedal to activate?

Yes, they are just drum brakes all the way around. It uses a lever.

The further the rear brake shoes are away from the drum contact surface the more play there will be in the brake pedal. This also is why the E-brake lever takes more travel to engage the parking brake.

If the problem started after the first repair the shop should follow up on the problem at no charge.

The rear shoes should self adjust. On most cars this occurs if the E-brake is engaged. Try pulling the E-brake lever a few times, determine if the pedal travel improves.

On some cars the adjustment is made when the brakes are in engaged when moving in reverse.

When pulled the lever should have approx 6-9 clicks before setting the brake. This can be adjusted by a nut on the lower part of the brake lever that takes up or releases slack in the cable.
