No, look for the item outside the case.

Where do you think the switch could be located because I can't seem to identify it. also I found an unconnected cable but its looks a little bad. I want to get some electronic cleaner for it.

See link below for photos of the switch. Click on "more info" for a larger photo.

1988 TOYOTA CAMRY Back Up Lamp Switch

Follow the shift cable to the shift lever on the trans, look in this area.

Later model trans may have incorporated the switch into the Park/Neutral/Gear indicator switch located behind the shift lever.

I can't seem to find this switch. I see this I guess rod or wire that moves when the gears change and it is incased in a plastic coiled tubing and that looks like it runs in between a tube going to the center of the car and to a switch thing that I can't identify to well.

Does the tube contain a cable and does it run to the throttle pulley. Have someone press on the gas pedal while you watch for movement at the throttle pulley. If so this is the kick down cable, has nothing to do with the reverse lights.

Did you have the trans replaced?

Later cars had the reverse light switch built into the park/neutral/gear indicator switch. The replacement trans may not have the stand alone switch or has the port where it installs plugged.

Well I guess I'll just end things here on that then. Toyomoho Thank you so much for your help. I really do appreciate it.

Might ask at the shop that replaced the trans. They should be able to tell you if the new trans has the stand alone switch.

Someone with wiring skills may be able to hook the back up lights into the park/neutral/gear indicator switch.
