Changing Door Handle on 97-01
My drivers side door handle (outside) on my 98 broke off about a year ago and I have yet to do anything to replace it. I think it's a pretty common problem as someone else I knowwith the same car had it happen to them. There is a tiny piece of plastic thats still there I have mastered using to get the door open but the average person to see it would think its impossible.
Anyway, it's time I do something about it as I may be getting a newer Camry soon and I don't want to have totry to it likethis. Dealership wants like $300 to do it.
Has anyone here done it themselves or know where there is a writeup explaining how to do it? I can only find it done for the 92-96 posted online with instructions.

Fairly simple task. Roll window all the way up before you start because when you pull the inner panel off so does the window switch. 2 10mm nuts and 2 or 3 plastic clips for the rods. Be carfull not to force the plastic clips because after many years they get brittle and break then you have to stop and go to the dealer for a new one. Just take your time and don't fret or freak out because you can't figure out how the dam thing comes apart. Good luck,

I just replacethe door handle yesterday for my 2000 Camry. The Chilton's manual was a good source, but it missed an important and somewhat tricky step - removing the plastic trim around the inside door latch. Its removeable, but the clips are hidden on the top and bottom of the left side of the trim. My dealer wated about $400 to replace the handle. I found one on the Internet for $30, plus about $6 for the paint.
NO matter how careful I was, I managed to break at least one clip holding the insdie skin, but the remaining ones, and the screws still hold the skin on firmly.

i was in a rush to do it because i was selling my car a couple weeks back and didn't want to sell it with it broken (after living with it for over a year). while i'll normally try anything myself i just didn't want to risk screwing up the door while it was for sale so i paid a local mechanic to do it while they were also doing the repair to get the airbag light off. he charged me about $150tofix itwhich included a factory Toyotahandlealready inthematching color. it's done and the car is gone.....
but thanks for tips which will no doubt help someone else in the future.
by the way, you cangetan aftermarkethandle on ebay for like $10unpainted. no idea on the quality.
