Default Changing Oil - 2009 Avalon V6 Limited 106K

This is the first time I replaced the oil on a Toyota with a cartridge filter. Purchased the filter which comes with a small and very large o ring. They are replaced on the housing which was easy to see. All is good, no leaks , etc and the guy at Oreillys gave me a few tips on using the oil cap filter tool.

Question. What is this device that was left over in the filter cartridge box from fram? I did not see it when I removed the housing and filter cartridge. See picture.

This way the oil from the housing does not make a mess when removed. A solid filter on my 95 camry screws off and oil leaks all over engine, but to pan below.

Thanks.
