Default Checking timing

OK so I got a timing light to check my timing, I know I hook it up to the #1 wire, but do I have to jumper anything on the diagnostics port? Also the timing light has an alligator clip on it which I am not sure what its for. There are 4 clips on the timing light, one for the spark plug wire, two for the battery, and this one green alligator clip.

Jump the TE1 and E1 terminals.

Engine idle speed should increase then return to normal.

Trans in neutral.

Don't know what the green wire does.
