Default coolant temp gauge issue-help

have a 95 camry le 4 cyl...the coolant gauge on the instrument cluster seems to be kicking in, kicking out when driving...ie it will move to the normal operating temperature, then cut out for awhile, then pop back up....so my guess is a loose wire/connection, or the temperature sending unit....any other suggestions? which sensor would befor this gauge? there is one called the engine coolent temp sensor, but that may go to the ecu to help monitor gas/air mixture etc.....so before i go buy one...thanks.

Default RE: coolant temp gauge issue-help

the sensor should be located close to the distributor...its the only single wire connector around...warn the car up disconnect the connect and see if the temp gauge moves...when you find it leave it disconnected and drive it around for awhile, see what the gauge does.. if the gauge moves with the sensor disconnect then you have a short in the wireharness or gauge...if it doesn't move then you have an intermitant short in the sensor..hope this helps.

thank you- looks like it was a wire short close to the connector...the sensor is fine, and is again showing a steady registering temp gauge....
