Default Gas tank door problem

Pulled into the gas station with my faithful 2000 Camry yesterday, pulled up on the gas tank cover release, got out to start fueling, and the cover (maybe not the proper name) was not open. Pulled the release again, same result. Tried gently to pry it open--wow, it was very well secured! Left the wedge end of the jack wrench in between the body and the cover, pulled the release again, and the cover popped open. When I got home (without closing the "door") I had my wife pull up on the release and the rather substantial pin that should release the door retracted completely, as it should. Any thoughts as to what I might adjust before closing the cover again, so it will open as it should? Thanks.

The door has a hinge and spring latch. The hinge can crack or the spring latch break. Check both for proper operation.
