Default Light Issues

2000 toyota camry

So recently i went camping, and we packed and left late at night, and i was leading so i had my headlights on. We were fine for about 15-20 minutes and then my lights flickered a few times. 5 minutes after that and they cut completely.
i decided to pull over turn the car off and just have a look at the battery and a few cables, maybe one was loose or something.
i got back in the car and it wouldnt start.

i paid the mechanic to fix it after a painful night and it broke before i even got home with the same issues. I managed to find out the dim relay had completely melted into its socket and melted the wires connecting to it.

we replaced the dim relay, the box it melted too, and the wires attached. i can now drive but with no high beams or low beams.

i need this issue fixed soon because i have rego coming up.

PLEASE HELP

ps i know little about cars
thanks, -Jaydan

a moderator will move the post for you

answer is
you find a wrecker with the same model camry
and buy what is needed to replace the melted parts that are damaged
...
...should be in a loom that plugs in

if not an auto electrician may have to match up the correct wires for you

Is this the dimmer relay (DIM) in the box having the 2 headlight fuses or the headlight relay (HEAD) in a larger box having more relays and fuses?

Is the amp rating of the two headlight fuses correct (10 amps). Are the headlights stock and not HID or some other?

Do you have a friend who has and can operate a VOM meter, soldering iron and knows something about electronics?

You need to check for excess current through the relay plus the connections to the relay which may be corroded or loose either can cause high heat.

If you need to drive and can't wait to replace the box. Check the relay socket plug terminals for damage or corrosion. Remove the box still connected to wiring and check the underside connections for the same issues. A bad connection may be your problem.

If you find the electrical problem and fix it, you could boot strap another relay into the box by connecting wires to the relay with push on terminals (hardware stores have these) and splicing into the terminals on the box. I will not be pretty but will work.
