Default misfire

My girlfriend has a 98' camry 4 cyl auto with 142,xxx miles on it i took a turn yesterday going to fast getting on the freeway and i got on the freeway hit the gas and the car shut off with all electrical working. I pulled over put it in park and started the car again all the piston weren't firing and after about a hundred feet it started knocking really badly so i pulled off at the next exit. I checked the oil it was not even coming up on the dipstick ( she tells me her dad takes care of routine things for the car) so i put three quarts of oil in it start it it's still knocking and drive home. I get home change the spark plugs they were desperatly needing to be changed also. Me and a friend checked the wires and on the number two wire i got shocked in the hand i was holding it with and realized that it was stripped to bare wire. I wrapped it in electircal tape and it was still misfiring. but all wires were getting spark just fine. The knocking is inside the engine and resonants down the exhaust. Is her engine gone? if not what do i need to do.
