Default Poor acceleration and rubber smell 97 Camry

97 Camry 4 cylinder engine
I had an oil leak that my dad ended up replacing the oil pump gasket and seal to fix. My dad left the next day on vacation and on my way to work noticed the poor acceleration and a kind of burning rubber smell coming from the engine
I know that the serpentine was removed and the timing belt was moved
on first glance the serpentine looks fine but to check the timing I would have to remove the cover plates

im hoping to get a better idea of what it is that could be causing this problem and if it’s a project I can handle myself or take it in to a shop. (Rather do myself because I can’t really afford labor costs until next month)

Did the engine run OK prior to the engine work?

took it to an auto store to run a diagnostic test and they showed a camshaft sensor problem
But will that cause a burning rubber smell?

Make sure the camshaft sensor wiring harness plug is connected to the sensor. That the harness and plug are not damaged and the sensor installed correctly onto the engine.

On the off chance check if the timing belt or a pulley, etc is rubbing against the plastic timing belt cover.

Check if something is too close to the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe such as wiring, hose, etc.
