Default removing a half shaft

On an 89 camry, how do I get the tie rod end out of the steering knuckle on the axle hub? I removed the cotter pin and castle nut, but Im unsure what to do next. Can I just pop it out with a mallet or do I need a special tool?

You need a tool so as not to damage the threads. Here's an example, but shop for different styles. http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/otc7315a.html as they all work a little different and you may want one that will do more than just the Camry's.

Use a hammer and hit the knuckle till the tie rod pops out...

Obviously hit it close to the tie rod. Unless your talking about the CV Shaft? Pop the ball joint and loosely thread the castle nut back on and smack it. In that case you didn't really need to take the tie rod off.

I did this yesterday on the same year Camry. I went to O'reillys auto parts and got this :http://www.oreillyauto.com/EW3/Produ...&currentPage=0

You buy it, use it, then return and they give you a refund. It was $13.00.
Worked like a charm. Did both sides. Good luck.
