Default serpentine tensioner bearing

How would you know or detect if a serpentine tensioner bearing is due for replacement?
does it produce a distinct sound in the engine bay? is there a rough idling?

What year and engine type, V6 or 4-cylinder?

Use a section of hose as a stethoscope and listen to front of timing belt cover. Could be a grinding noise, rattle, roar.
