Severe Fill up problems
I was driving my mom's 98 Camry, and she asked me to put some gas in the tank. She gave me $14 to do so. So I went to the gas station, prepaid, took the cap off, and started pumping. I was able to get about $3 worth of gas in and the pump shut off, so I tried again, got a little more, and fuel started to come out the filler neck. I got the change, got in the car, and when I started it up, it read a quarter of a tank.
Last night, with the needle on "E", I tried again, and the same situation.
My dad and I are most likely going to be pulling the gas tank down tomorrow. Is there anything we should look for? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
The car is a 98 Camry sedan 4 cylinder automatic, not sure if that would help, but I thought I'd include it just in case.

yo!.. i've had this problem before, but all i did was open the openning a bit to let the air out???..idk? das what the guy @ the station told me cuz i went in and asked if there's something wrong w/his pumps and what not... so yeah.. das what i did... hope this helps. and welcome.
My coworker suggested I do something like that, and not stick the nozzle in the filler neck as far so it could get more air. I tried that, but even between that and the vent hole, it didn't work.
Is there another pressure valve of sorts farther down in the filler tube that could be stuck?

was the car actually on empty? it could be the fuel guage reading wrong. there is one other thing that could happen there is an over fill valve of sorts in the filler neck which puts fuel into the charcol canister if you over fill the car. I suppose its possiable that something is blocking the filler neck and you are actually filling the canister how ever this would cause the check engine light to come on. So i guess the first major q is was the car actually empty?
The car actually is empty, and the lower valve is apparently opening. My dad ran "fish tape"down and felt the valve open, but it's still creating fill up problems. We've been able to put fuel in the tank, but so far by only dribbling the fuel down the neck.
I'm having a similar problem. Everytime I get gas, the pump clicks off every 1/2 gallon or so. I can fill it, but either the attendant or I have to stand there and keep restarting the pump. This happens at different gas stations.
I have a 98 camry le, 4cyl.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I am having the same problem with my 93 3.0l v6 camry. The fuel just shoots back up the filler neck and sprays all over the ground. I am sure the tanke is empty when I attempt to fill it, but it just wont take the fuel. Please help!
the most common.reason for you guys problem 1. a restriction in the filler neck. 2 filler by pass valve in the gas tank isn't venting out pressured air to evap canister and last evap canister restriction, usually this will follow with a CEL light on
