1999 Camry Starts and Stalls
I've done many searches and haven't seen any that seem to match my current experiences w/my 1999 Camry LE (4 cyl); 130k miles.
Recently, the car was running fine then the cel came on w/EGR flow code. Replaced the EGR and EGR modulator valves. Then, not 2 days later, the water pump failed catastrophically (left me stranded); no pre-failure warning, e.g., squeeling, temp problem, etc. Had the car towed to my house, replaced water pump and timing belt.
Now, the car starts right up; however, it runs smoothly for 10 - 15 seconds and then RPMs immediately drop, engine starts to buck, misfire and then stalls. It starts right back up and behaves the same. I started it, rev-ed to 2000 RPMs; it maintained for 10 - 15 seconds and then same thing happened: RPMs dropped and engine bucked and stalled.
I've:
- Rechecked timing multiple times; it's right on. Besides, I wouldn't have expected it to start up if timing was out.
- Checked plugs. Appear carbon-ed up, dry not wet.
- Checked for vacuums leaks. Found none.
- Checked compression - good in all cyl.
Replaced plugs and wires - no change. It must be getting gas otherwise it wouldn't start up. But it appears something is cutting out 10 - 15 seconds after startup which is causing it to shut down.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
