Default 2009 Standard Camry, Black Base Paint and Black Tint, Intro, 34k miles

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to come by and introduce myself. I am new here. I have a toyota camry for about 1.5 years now. 34K miles (warranty about to expire)

I have a black camry with 20% tinting on it and overall has been solid car albeit a couple small issues and our exciting toyota recall crisis! ha.

Anyways, just wanted to introduce myself. If anyone has any suggestions for care/maintenance at my level and if anyone would like to share input on extended warranties on camry's I'd definitely love to hear your opinions. Thank you and happy holidays to everyone.

Welcome to CF!

In the past i used to NOT recommend extended warranties for Toyota products but this opinion has changed for Toyota. Now if the price is cheap enough would recommend it.

Buy only a Toyota factory extended warranty!

You can buy this from any US Toyota dealer as some charge a whole lot less then others!! Thus need not purchase it local if the price is too high.

You might review posts and if needed ask about this subject at the Toyotanation website where members should be up to speed on which dealer is offering the lowest extended warranty price at this time. The savings can be substantial.

The place to start for maintenance is the owners manual.

If the car has an autotrans suggest you keep up with checking on the condition of the trans fluid. The trans may use a synthetic fluid whose condition is checked based on color. It is supposed to last over 100K but this is long after the warranty expires thus have it checked (or check it yourself) when the miles start to add up. Might change before 100K even if it looks OK. Much sooner if pulling trailer or hot rodding the car.

This along with the power steering and brake fluids. Plus of course radiator coolant.

Most of the wear issues on cars is beyond the owners control If driven normally). Having clean fluids in good condition is one aspect the owner can do to greatly improve the life of the trans, power steering system, brake system, etc.

If having an autotrans don't go from a forward to reverse gear (or opposite) with the car moving. Make sure the car is completely stopped. Failure to do so will result in damage to the trans over time.

One other suggestion is to try to find out all the technical service bulletins (TSB) for the car. An internet search will provide more info on this. These are bulletins the dealer receives covering defects, completes, etc and what to do about them for a specific model/year(s)/engine and trans type.

Your car may have a problem you think is normal or some other issue that may be covered in a TSB. Unfortunately if a TSB exists for your problem, the dealer will only apply it if you complain. They don't volunteer this info.

Don't try to force a dealer to comply with a TSB if you car does not have the problem covered in the TSB, most will not do the work. If something does apply to you, a problem with the car covered by a TSB but the dealer states it is "normal." Review the bulletin, then complain to the dealer with the symptoms outlined in the TSB, don't mention the TSB unless the dealer refuses to fix the problem or says "it is normal." They don't like the customer to tell them how to fix the car.

Thank you so much for the reply. I found it very informative. I will do some research on toyotanation and find a good price on extended warranty and post my results here.

I noticed Toyota doesn't volunteer to do work unless you complain.

The other day I went to the dealer to do some "warranty check up and work"

I asked them to check the car for certain parts, then they said they only do a multi-point inpsection so unless I have a specific complaint then they can't do the work etc...

So I came up with a bunch of random little things I noticed and had them check... like brakes for example and also battery...etc.

Then they actually did a good inspection and I stayed ther ea few hours and they took care of it and did some work and replacement on brake discs/pads, and also helped me out with a new battery...

So it worked out nicely for myself.

Check your car thoroughly and anything that seems odd should be pointed out otherwise they won't really look into it and do proper work even if you are under warranty.

Even if you bring in for an oil change... odds are they don't check anything really. JMHO
