Default 95 camry 2.2 poor gas milage

Hello everyone my wife has an 95 2.2 Camry, and the gas mileage is terrible. I've read that it could be one of two 02 sensors. Does anyone have a how to on checking the sensor with a Multi Meter ? also I'm going to change the plugs also. What do you guys recommend as far as plugs. Car has about 230,000 miles on it. Also from time to time she and i both smell gas fumes. Any idea of what that could possibly be? Thanks in advance.

What is the MPG? Besides poor MPG how does the engine run?

California or Federal emissions car? There is a sticker under the hood stating CALIF or FED.

Assuming the exhaust had two 02 sensors the first one would be the concern as the second one monitors the emissions converter.

Suggest a tune up of plugs (NGK or Denso- maybe iridium), cap, rotor and maybe plug wires.

Check air filter in case for some reason it is really, really plugged up which would be rare.

Try the following.

Find a small box labeled Diagnostic mounted on the passenger or drivers strut tower. Inside the box are terminals.

Obtain a voltmeter.

Warm engine to normal operating temp.

Connect positive meter probe to VF1 terminal, neg probe to E1.

Maintain engine at 2500 rpm for approx 90 sec to warm up 02 sensor.

Connect terminals TE1 and E1 - Maintain 2500 rpm.

Count the number of times the meter needle fluctuates in 10 seconds. If 8 or more times then normal operation - stop test.

If less the 8 times repeat the 2500 rpm @ 90 sec warm up and after this 90 sec time hold rpm at 2500.

Check number of needle fluctuations in 10 sec. If 8 or more normal - stop test.

If less then 8 disconnect TE1 and E1 - Maintain 2500.

Measure voltage between VF1 and E1.

If more then 0 volts replace 02 sensor.

If 0 volts and check engine light on read out codes. Normal codes are 21, 25, 26. If something else then repair cause of the code(s).

Disconnect PCV valve hose and again measure VF1-E1 voltage.

If 0 volts replace sensor.

The test is for the first sensor off the cylinder head having 1 wire.

Having never done the test the last part does not make sense but give it try and post back with results.

It's possible the 02 sensor can be sluggish but the check engine light is still of.
