Having a tough time troubleshooting this problem. My 1995 4 Cylinder Camry gets about 17 MPG. Seems quite low for Camrys. On the other hand my 1996 Camry V6 gets 21 MPG around town. For the 1995, I changed the air filter, spark plugs, put in fuel additives and also tried to clean the intake. Same results. 1995 runs fine with no problem with power; the only thing we notice is when you first start the car in the morning, it smokesa bit for a minute or two and then stops. No oil burning. Has about 112K on it. Any suggestions before I take it into a repair shop? Thanks.

 

could be many things...but seeing that u have a car just one year newer than it running better, im going to assume u take good care of ur cars and know a good amount of stuff.

so the only thing im really going to suggest to you is to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes.

make sure u know how to shut off ur alarm and radio and all that other stuff that can be affected with the disconnection of the battery.

you should be in the mid 20's with the i4, espeically if you're getting 21 with the v6.

while typing this, one cheap part popped into my head that might help. PCV valve. take it out, shake it - if it rattles you're good, if it doesnt rattle or barely rattles (theres a small ball inside), then go get a new one for a few bucks, it may help.

 

The smoke in the morning sounds normal. Aslongs its in the morning when its starting to warm up and not everytime you start it up. Unless its cold outside? When you step outside and its really cold and take a breath and you see it. Same effect.
As far as gas mileage it does sound like a little much. Do you have any check engine lights on? Do you smell fuel at all when you step out of the car?

 

No Engine Light on or gas smell. Will discoonect battery for a bit and replace the PCV and see what happens. Thanks.

 

Leak in gas tank (or fuel system)too small to drip but just enough to evapoate, brake pad(s) sticking on due to no service on slides, auto trans not shifting into lockup mode so rpm's higher, dirty air filter, check evap system as it may be drawing raw gas into intake, odometer/tripometer not accurate.
