Default Beyond Frustrated

I bought a 2026 Camry XSE a few days ago. My first Toyota. While I'm happy with the car, I'm having all kinds of issues with the software. Specifically, driver profiles and seat/mirror memory. I have 2 profiles set up. One is for me and the other is for my wife. Recognizing which of us has climbed into the driver seat has been erratic. When it does get it right, it will not move the seat to the proper location. The proper seat memory button must be manually pressed. Each of our key fobs are linked to our profile via the toggle switch on the infotainment screen under personal settings. I finally was able to link my fob to my seat position by pressing the set button, the proper memory number and then holding the lock button down on the fob until it flashes on the infotainment screen that it was linked. Trying the same procedure for my wife's key fob does nothing. Now, when unlocking the car by grabbing the door handle (with my fob in my pocket), the seat will go to the proper position. But, if the car is unlocked already, the seat will not move when opening the door. I don't want to keep the car locked when it is in the garage. Every previous car I have owned with memory seats will send the seat to it's proper location when opening the door. How is it supposed to work with the Camry? Any words of wisdom will be appreciated.

Manual states doors must be locked.

It also states some customization is possible but provides no detail

Since it is a new car, start by asking the selling dealer. Dealers have software to access everything.

Having the doors locked may be a "safety" feature.

Seat/mirror memory reminds me of now less seen "hands free" trunk opener on minivans: They dont work, or rarely work. ONE reason: Under your car splashed dirt, mud, and road grime on the sensor. So, the solution to getting it to work "hands free" is crawl under the car, wipe off the sensor, try it again. Yea, that's convenience..for Toyota marketing, but not for us. Toyota marketing "forgets" to mention that putting your key in the slot and turning it is way more convienient than climbing under the car, and cleaning off the "foot recognition sensor" each time. It gets worse. So, more than once, we have cats that crawl under my cars..feral cats. If the sensor is clean and a key fob "in range", up goes the trunk..when a cat gets under your car. More than once, my neighbor calls and informs me my car liftgate is up. Yep, its hard to tell when proximity key fob is in range, and up goes the liftgate..when you dont expect it. Mostly that does not happen when driving, but only parked in my driveway. Still its a safety issue, as thieves get full access to my car, with the hatch in the up position, plus the cats can climb in my car and use my car for a litter box. The hatch can go up any. time when parked. Key fobs "can be in proximity" to work even when inside my home, as the car is parked right by it, depending on where the fob is stored and the car is parked.

Ditto for "seat memory"/mirror memory. "Even if" if worked flawlessly, it still wouldnt work. Why? Yours/your wife key fobs have a sensor. Who got in the car first? YOu? Your spouse? Its probably gonna recognize the key fob which is first recognized as the driver, even if your spouse enters first, with her key fob in her purse. Where does she keep her purse with the key fob? In the center center seat storage space? That may be closer to the sensor, than your key in your pocket.

The sensor is likely understandably confused on who is driving, "even assuming" perfect software with no design flaws or bugs, a bad unwarranted assumption.

You "may" get it to recognize one fob, and set that one, and even may get it to work with your wifes fob, different from yours, as long as you only have one fob in the car at a time. Now that's convienient. Have your wife leave her keys in the house. So, you go to walmart, your wife gets tired wants to sit down in the car, and, no key in her purse. So, she cant get in, as she had to leave her key fob at home so the seat mirror or memory works.

My advice: Take the seat mirror memory for the "marketing gimmick" it is. Under many circumstances, such as you driving/vs your wife while both fobs are in the car, one fob entering the car first (the pasenger not the driver) defaulting to the driver, or location of the fobs is gonna render the seat/mirror memory unreliable or useless or a source of frustration. Save the frustration, use seat/mirror memory sparingly or not at all, like most people. Possible exception: Ford has a keypad on many of its high end models, probably a different key for different drivers. The keyed in code will identify the driver when he/she opens the driver door, for memory settings. As there may be a different key code for each driver. May be. Unless the users dont want to set up multiple drivers, they want everyone to use the same code. Maybe they dont want to read manuals and see utubes on how to do this, and I would not blame them a bit.

Make technology work for you, dont work for technology.

I see many people who just forgo those tech marketing gimmicks like seat memory and hands free liftgates.
My brother and my spouse hardly even use the backup camera..or adaptive cruise, or blind spot monitor...safety features much easier, in practice to use than the gimmicky seat memory or hands free tail gate.

Simple: When the tech frustrates you/is not easy and intuitive, ditch it and "go old school" and adjust your mirror and seat each time you enter, like they have been doing since Columbus discovered America in 1492. Why? The tech is obviouslly not intuitive and easy to use, its not advanced enough to recognize the driver each time, especially when both fobs are in the car.
