Default Fuel gauge

I have 1998 Toyota Camry. My fuel gauge is not working. I removed the fuel pump from the tank and connected it, and the gauge worked, but when I put he fuel pump back into to the tank it stopped working again. So the gauge works well when the fuel pump is not inside the tank, but once you put the pump back inside the tank, the gauge stops working. Please help

How did you test the sender?

Check ground wire, brown.

Can only guess.

Inspect the sender unit and wiring..

When installed, the sensor hold down ring may distort the plate the connector resulting in a bad connections. Connect the sensor and move around the hold down plate, wiring connector and wiring to check for problem connections.

Check the ground wire for continuity to chassis ground.

Use an ohm meter to check sensor wiring resistant when outside of tank and installed. Brown is ground, Green/White is the sender, yellow/red is low fuel sender.

Check tank float for being "water logged" with fuel and is no longer floating in tank.

Make sure something in the tank is not binding with the sender arm/float.

Make sure the sender electrical contact on the variable resistor are still maintaining contact when the sensor is now being operated by the fuel (level) and not your hand.
