I have a 99 camry 4 cylinder. This car sat still for several years. I have now began to work on this car and get it running again. the original issue was the head gasket. I didnt have the money at the time so I poured barrs gasket repair into the engine and it stopped the engine from over heating. While the car sat, The gas separated and turned the gas tank to rust. I have put a new gas tank on, new fuel pump, and new fuel filter. The engine will not start. I checked the plate on the fuel rail and I am getting good clean gas flowing there. I can get the engine to run if spraying starter fluid into the intake but it chokes out when I stop spraying. I am not sure what my next move should be. Can you help?

 

How bad was the rust.

How are the plugs? Need a white spark, able to gap 1/2 inch.

If head gasket, check compression and coolant getting into the cylinders which is tough on plugs.

 

The rust was very bad. When I. First checked the sock on the pump it looked like orange clay. The plugswere loose and had a Bit of oil on them. I did not check the gap.

 

You changed the can fuel filter in the engine compartment?

If plugs are questionable change them. Make sure the ign is providing good spark.

When plugs are out try to determine if the injectors are putting fuel into the cylinders.

If the rust "clay" made it past the can filter, the injectors could be plugged.

Could be the fuel lines also rusted.

The internet has posts on cleaning injectors. If removing take note of their individual location as they may not all be the same. Typically they are color marked.

 

I agree with toyomho. Button up those tune up issues.
