Default $700 @ a shop to tighten breaks and fix up my shocks? was I ripped off? 99 camry xle v6

So yeah, my breaks were making noises so I went to a shop to have them tighten them (noise still occur but not as bad). They also said they did something to my shocks (I think they made them better or something). The total was $700
was I ripped off?

I am not sure what they did but my new Koni shocks were a whole lot less. But lots of little issues will add up fast.

Not enough info to determine what was done. New brakes, new upper shock mounts, etc?

That's a total rip off.

Brake pads are really easy to replace. If the rotors were worn, it would only cost about $40-60 for each new one.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Think about getting a shop manual and some tools.

I had a shop destroy my tranny on my old car when they didn't fill up the fluid at the 60k mile service.

After that, I always do my own service.

If they just tightened your brakes and did not replace them then yes you did get ripped off - a new set plus new shocks should come to around $800. Also, what year is your car? and was this a dealer or a local shop?

I think it is resonable, of course you can spend less money if you have friends on this hand.

Hey man, sounds like you got ripped. NEW brakes PLUS NEW shocks should run you less than $600. Did you go to a dealer or just some shop? In my experience if you hit the dealer they will give you a great rate especially on older models of THEIR cars.
