Default "Cruising Range" calculation on Fuel Consumption on '12 XLE

Just bought a 2012 Camry XLE 3.5 V6, everything except Nav. ($1500 when a Garmin is $100, no thanks).

The fuel consumption mode on the display lists "Cruising Range". I'm trying to figure out how it calculates it. It seems to me "Cruising Range" is reading low.

I owned other vehicles that have "Miles to Empty". They always seemed to use recent MPG times the amount of fuel left. So if I was doing a lot of highway driving in the recent past, it might say 490 miles with a full tank. If I was doing more city driving, it might was 440 miles with a full tank.

My Camry has a 17gal fuel tank. I just did a 243 miles trip. I drove conservatively and got 32MPG. When I filled up, that would give me a theoretical miles to empty of 554miles. I think when I filled it up, Cruising Range went up to around 375 miles. That seems low. Now I figure maybe there's a bit of safety margin and maybe it's averaging more than just the last drive. But, i would think it would be closer to how many miles I would really get.

Anyone know what the "Cruising Range" calculation is?
