Unhappy Water Pump

Hello

My 1994 camry loses coolant while engine is running. Seems like the water pump needs to be replaced, unless there is some other fix. Is this a complicated job? It is behind the timing belt etc. and I have never undertaken anything like this. Wonder if it is a DIY or should I just plunk down $700 at the dealer for timing belt plus water pump. Car has 122K and the pump and belt were replaced around 80-90K by the previous owner.

Thanks

Are you actually seeing coolant in the water pump area (below the timing cover)? The pump has a small hole in the housing where the drive shaft is mounted. Typically coolant would leak out of this hole indicating a bad bearing seal.

If the pump was replaced at 80-90K is it highly unusual for it to leak at 122K. A pump should last at least 122K even if not changed.

Unless you are absolutely sure it is the timing belt suggest you check ALL the coolant hoses. These include the bypass hoses that are somewhat hidden and harder to get.

Check the radiator upper and lower tanks for cracks and leaks. The plastic tanks can crack and leak.

Check the overflow coolant tank that can crack and leak
