Default 1995 camry Speedometer isn't reading correctly

hey everybody i've got a 95 camry 4cyl auto and the other day the speedo started going crazy. sometimes it reads anywhere from 0 to 140 when i'm driving and sometimes it reads correctly but only for a moment. it seems like it would be a speed pickup going bad or maybe crudded up a bit since it works sometimes. none the less, its our daily driver so i gotta find where the pickup is located on the tranny. hgas anybody delt with this problem before?

Pickup is on top of the differential section of the transmission case.

Can I access the speed sensor from under the hood or do I have to get under the car?

Under hood. Look on top of trans housing where the axles plug into diff.

Sensor looks like one of items at the link below:

The replacement sensor may not have the driven gear. Swap old gear to new housing. Gear is held in by a spring clip, location obvious if you look.
