Default 1998 camry

187k miles told timing belt changed about 60k ago. If this belt breaks will it hurt anything? Should I change it to just be on the safe side? thanks.

Check belt for signs of cracking, drying out, or looseness. You probably should change it. The part itself is cheap just labor is expensive if you dont know how to do it yourself.
It should be an non interference engine meaning no damage if it breaks, just the car will stop.

So take a look and make a decision.

The timing belt on the 4cylinder engine gets fairly noisy with a loud rattle coming from beneath the timing cover once the timing belt stretches out. This occures anywhere between 2000-3500 RPM. If you hear this rattle, consider changing the belt as soon as money allows. No mechanical damage will result from a broken timing belt- but do it for safety's sake.

timing belt should be changed around 60K and can last up to around 90K before failure depending on particular situation.
moreover, with the v6 it is non interference so besides being stranded somewhere and needing a tow, engine will not be damaged.
