I need to replace engine on 07 SE 4cylinder. should i remove engine and trans together or can a disconnect engine from trans without removing trans? Thanks much.

Water pump went bad and made engine overheat... Bad motor per toyota

well, it's fixable with engine block still in the engine bay.. but it's a lot of tinkering and grommets and gaskets replacements.
no, you will not be able to pull engine out because of the output shaft engagement into transmission. Pull entire powertrain out, get engine stand - rental - and take it from there.
07 pumps suck.
like I said, it is still not that disastrous to replace engine. even if you got no oil and seized one, it's still repairable with engine in engine bay.

 

pulled engine out last night and left trany in... no problems. It was my 1st engine removal and I'd say it went pretty good... just lots of bolts! there was water in oil... I understand it is most likely best just to replace with good used engine since water is really hard on engine bearing? any comments

 

did you, hah? cool then. be very careful placing another one in, as input shaft has to engage 3 times into converter.
as far as you do not have coolant - should be no water in engine - in combustion chambers, it was not hydro-locked and no mechanical damage was done to it. when engine overheats, and no one overheats them for LONG time, some rubber grommets and gaskets harden a bit.
sounds like your head gasket blew. but with engine out, all it takes is to take head off, replace all seals and gaskets, and put it back in. also, valve stem seals. that's about 300 bucks in parts and a day of labor.
anyhow, buy certified used low mileage engine from Japan, if you want to go forth and replace it. still do not know why to, but if you have to, they do come low mileage, and are sweet to install, as EVERYTHING is in place. they simply cut wires and hoses, so even plugs are in place. you'll run into about 700-800 bucks, maybe more.
