Default 1993 2.2l 4 cyl - what is attached to block under the crank?

My 1993 camry over heated pretty severly and started making some bad sounds. so i took the oil pan off to inspect oil, con rods, crank, ect., and there was what looked almost like an oil pump to me but according to manual its not. It is geared to the crank and has 2 rotating shafts in it - i need to know what this is and if it needs to be timed to the crank? Please and thank you for your help.

The engine has balance shafts to help control vibration. The shafts need to be timed to the crank.

Thanks. so i was looking in my chiltons manual and it says nothing about the balance shafts. what is the specs for timing that. (crank and balance shaft alignment?)

Set crank to TDC.

Set both balance shafts so the punch mark on each shaft is lined up with a groove on the housing.

If the engine were upside down and you were facing the side of the engine so you left hand is nearest the flywheel side of the crank, the punch marks and grooves would be on the flywheel side facing up.

Before installing the housing make sure the spacers between the block and housing are installed (this sets the gear backlash).

Before tightening the bolts, pull the housing toward you (this assumes the engine is still upside down and you still facing the block as above). You need how this applies when the engine oriented (installed) in the car.

Torque bolts in an alternating sequence (like a head) to 36 ft-lbs.

Recheck crank at TDC and shafts aligned as above.
