85 Camry Intermitting Failure
Drives great ~65mph for ~10 miles, looses power as if key was turned off. Car spins over with no attemp to start. After trying to crank for ~ 5min., car starts. Continues down road as if nothing has happened for ~ 1.5 miles when car quits again. Same thing, car starts back after ~5 mins. Continue on another 6 miles to work with no problem. Happens every day.Car had beenparked for a couple of years beforeI purchased it. I have installed new battery, new alternator, new fuel filter, new plugs, removed the gas tank andcleanedout trash, cleaned fuel pump filter. Check engine is on when ignition is on but goes out when car is started so I know the bulb is o.k. What next? Car runs really good when it runs...
When it stops do you have a spark at the plug wire? Years ago Toyota had a (TSB) for a condition like this. Poss igniter.
Not to many of the old Camrys on the road, up north there all rusted out.

Looking at the work you've done I would suspect spark first. It could be the coil. As the coil heats it can cause problems that don't show up when cool. Notsure about the ignitor as 85suprasaid but if there is a TSB it could be that. The ignitor is just a switch that cuts the primary off and on to the coil with signals from the ECU and then causes the high voltage in the coil for the plugs. I would first suspect the coil. Do as 85supra says and carry a spark plug wrench with you. When the car fails take out a plug and ground it to the engine. Turn the engine over and see if you are getting a strong blue spark at the plug. If no sparkit could be ignitor or coil or even ECU (but I doubt it), if a weak spark probably coil. As said my first guess is coil as it happens when hot and corrects when cools down. If the coil is an external coil then you could carry some water with you. When the engine dies pour some water on the coil housing to cool it and see if the car will start.
Thanks for the info... I have a little more updated information. It seems to be more frequent as the gas level in the tank decreases. After several stalls (8) last Thursday with 1/4 tank of gas, I filled the tank completely up. I also installed a fuel pressure guage in the car so that I can monitor the pressure while driving. Has yet to quit since the fill up. Best that I can recall, problem first started with ~ 1/2 tank of gas. Assuming gas level is the problem, would it be due to increased head pressure, pump heating up when not totally submerged or sucking air?
I'm not sure how far into the gas the pump is submerged? But I would think 1/2 tank would not be enough to expose pump to air and over heat. It could be the pickup tube has come loose or been bent if you banged the tank. Why don't you carrya can of gas and the next time itstalls put the gas in and see if it starts. If gas proves out then remove the pump and check inside tank.
I have a 95 Toyota Camry Wagon and drives great, always pass inspection but when I am driving it turns off and then I start the car again I keep on driving and minutes later the same thing. When it does that, it smells like gas. Is this linked to the gas? it happens if the tank is full or not
