91 Camry- Where is xmission shifter switch?
Hey All,
Got a 91 Camry I bought new with 310K miles on it. When it gets hot it won't start. Found out that if I put the transmission in nuetral, disconnect the starter solenoid wire at the plug where it exits the starter and use a jumper wire to the end of this wire to +12 on the battery it starts fine. Meaning the starter and solenoid are good. Found a wiring diagram on the web and it shows a transmission interlock switch. I think it is failing when it gets hot. But where is it? and can it be fixed or adjusted without putting it in the shop by an ondinary person with ordinary tools? I'd like to sell the car but don't want the new owner to have this problem with it because the buyer would be someone with very little money. And it's not worth 300 dollars to fix it to me. Hope someone can help! Thanks.

You're looking for the neutral safety switch (NSS). Located at the end of the shift cable on the transmission. You'll need to determine which auto trans you have but I doubt there's much difference between the NSS. Here is an online manual. http://camrystuff.com/manuals/Gen2/A..._Transaxle.pdf
You have to scroll some but it's in there. Adjustment may help, but with that many miles and years the switch contacts may just be worn out. I don't think it's possible to dismantle and clean. Wrecker part could work.

Thanks Pedro but that led to another question. The switch bracket is shown on page 22 and page 201 at the bottom of the page. Figure BL0017. They call it the Neutral Start Switch. Can you tell me if this is a drawing of the shifter itself? In other words if I pull the console out and I'm looking at the shifter is that what they are showing here? I think it is but I'd sure like to verify before I pull the console.
You are right about the worn contacts . But maybe I can find a junker somewhere. Thanks Man!

I didn't go back to the online manual but I would look under the car before dismantling the consol from above. It appears the shifter cable not the shifter, switches the switch. On another Toyo I made adjustments from under the car directly to the neutral start (safety) switch. I think it is held on by two bolts that you loosen and then are able to re-position the switch a little. I was trying to get the back-up lights to work. Adjusting the switch worked at that time. You'll need a helper so the helper can attempt to start the engine as you make adjustments, otherwise you'll constantly be getting up and down - it will drive you nuts. Also make sure you put the emergency brake on for safety.
