Hi,

I have a 1999 Camry LE 4-cylinder automatic. The car is not shifting into gear. I popped the hood up and noticed that the transmission control cable (shifter cable) connection to the neutral saftey switch bracket is broken. It's a piece of plastic that broke but the cable still moves back and forth just fine. It looks like it broke at the boot. Do I need to get a new cable or is it just a matter of buying a new part?

Yes it was the end of the cable. There's a piece of plastic that connects the cable to the lever that broke.

 

The shifter cable should attach to the trans shift link with something made of steel. It has a bearing on one end that bolts to the link, the other end is swagged to the cable.

The outer portion of the cable is held onto a plate that is bolted to the trans housing.

If the cable is broken, as in the end link that attaches to the shift lever broke off the cable then the cable needs replacing.

The cable used to be a Toyota only part but this may have changed over time. The cable assy is expensive, $100-160.

Might try a junk yard. Some distant yards will pull a cable and mail it to you.

The online Toyota dealer at 1sttoyotaparts sells parts at steep discounts.

One person was able to clamp something onto the end of the cable to reattach it to the shift rod.
